Town Public Hearing on the Plume rescheduled to January 15, 2026 @ 5pm

Landfill Plume Town Hearing Date Change

The Town of Brookhaven and the NYS DEC will hold a public hearing to present a plan and gather community input on JANUARY 15, 2026 4 PM Exhibit / 5PM Hearing at Brookhaven Town Hall.

Residents are urged to stand together and attend the upcoming  hearing—our voices matter now more than ever. The plume and its forever contaminates are impacting Beaver Dam Creek, Carmans River, our bay and our marine life. This is not just an environmental issue—it’s about our health, our children’s future, and the livelihoods of those who depend on these waters.

When we speak as one community, we are powerful. Let’s show the DEC that we care deeply about protecting our home, our waters, and our way of life.

Be there. Be heard. Be the voice for our river, our bay, and our future.

Holiday Cheer- A Hamlet Tradition

Let Holiday Cheer light up the season.
When we choose kindness and generosity, the glow of community becomes a little brighter for everyone.

Join neighbors and friends for a simple, heartfelt gathering that honors connection and tradition. Adorn the community tree with your handcrafted, natural ornaments, savor cozy cider from Troop 4, enjoy treats from Sweet Moments Baking, warm up with cocoa from Jim’s Deli, and take in the holiday cheer shared by the Brookhaven Free Library, and Karin Wagner and friends.

It’s a moment to pause, breathe, and make memories that feel both gentle and lasting with  memories made.

Together, we can extend compassion through our collection drives in support of all creatures and quietly celebrate the true meaning of the season with the care we offer one another.

We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, December 13, from 3–5pm at Fire Place Park(located at South Country Road and Fire Place Neck Road).
Rain date: Sunday, 12/14, same time.

2025 Marina Closing

A message from our Dockmaster

Hello All Boaters.

The 2025 closing date for Squassux Marina is November 15.  Please remove all lines, bumpers and hoses. Water will be turned off around the 15th and the  lights several weeks after. Gate PINS will be deactivated for the winter.

Winter moorage is available on Carmans river. Please text the dockmaster phone and leave your name and current slip number to receive a slip assignment and an invoice for the winter season.

If you would like to store your non-motorized vessel for the winter, please email bvamail@brookhavenvillageassocition.org

The ice eater install party will be scheduled for early December based on the best weather forecasted during that time frame. In order to plan to participate in installing the ice eaters the BVA will email a specific time and day a week in advance with a possible rain date as well.

If you no longer need a slip for the next season, please text the dockmaster phone so slips may be filled. And, if you are upsizing or down sizing, please text the dockmaster so that the best accommodations can be arranged for 2026.

Please note that only fully completed invoices returned next year by March 1 will guarantee a slip.  This includes  an up to date pic of the current registration and payment in full by the invoice due date. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out.

Regards,

Andy Dockmaster 631-819-4151

Community Meeting

Community Meeting

In early September, the Town sent letters to residents and landowners within 500 feet down-gradient of the contamination plume. A formal public hearing is scheduled for December. Date currently unknown.

To help answer questions about the plume, the contaminants, the history, impacts on health and our households and the next steps for our community,  join your BVA, Citizens Campaign for the Environment Executive Director Adrienne Esposito, and BLARG volunteer Lynne Maher for a community informational:

🗓 Monday, October 27
🕖 7:00 PM
📍 St. James Parish Hall

This is a great opportunity to get informed  and prepare as a community ahead of the Town’s December public hearing.

For more information, please visit the DEC page on the topic.
